This newsletter starts us off on March 26th with a trip to Concord NC, at the Jackson Park Vol. Fire Dept. for their Car Show and Sound Off. This is a benefi t/fund-raiser for the fire dept. Our club members, Ray and Deborah Haynes received a 1st Place Corvette Class with their 1992 Corvette LT1.

On April 16th, club members got together for “Old Time Chili Cook-Off and Cruise-In For Miracles Car Show” (for the Children’s Miracle Network- Hospitals Helping Kids). This was held in Asheboro NC. The following won awards for “Top 40” class: Ray and Deborah Haynes with their 1992 Corvette LT1, Kenneth Payne with his 1970 Mustang Mach 1 and Judi and Donald Grubb with their 1964-1/2 Mustang.

April 23rd, Ray and Deborah Haynes were in Julian, NC at the “Spring Slamboree at Piedmont Dragway”. They took First Place and Best GM with their 1992 Corvette LT1. This event was a fund-raiser for the Piedmont Dragway.

On May 7th, Ray and Deborah Haynes were in Patrick Springs VA, for the Patrick Trophy Shop Car, Truck & Bike Show. This fund-raiser was to benefit the Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church Women’s Ministries. At this event, their 1992 Corvette LT1 won three awards: Top 100, Top 80 Pre-Register Award and Top 50 Pre-Register Plaque. Also, on May 7th, at the Thomasville Lions Club Car & Truck Show in Thomasville NC, Donald and Judi Grubb took home a Best of Show with their 1964-1/2 Mustang.

On May 14th, the Youth Group at New Grace Baptist Church sponsored a Car, Truck and Bike Show. Judi and Donald Grubb took the 2nd Place & Original Class with their 1964½ Mustang. Deborah and Ray Haynes took 3rd Place in the 1973 and Up Original Class.

Also, on May 14th, Mitchell’s Grove United Methodist Church in High Point NC, hosted their fi rst car show called Show in the Grove. This show was sponsored by The Iron Men of the Church, a group of church members who give back to their neighborhood in the form of charity for the needy, the local elementary school and repair work for the elderly. Club members who took home a “First Place Trophy”: Lee Mauldin with a 1957 Chevy, Jim Newman with a 1965 Chevy Farm Truck, Red Charles with his Carolina Blue 1955 Chevy Truck, Tyler Stroup with his Black Sinclair Station 1957 Chevy Truck and Carlton Johnson with his 1965 Ford Mustang. Other Furnitureland Club members attending this show were Jack Harris, Carl Warrell and Staley Hancock. This fi rst show was affected in attendance by the weather, but this did not dampen the spirits of the show givers. The guys at Mitchell’s Grove had a well-prepared show fi eld. I understand there may be a Fall Car Show in the planning, we will look forward to this event. Here are some photos of the cars and trucks shown at Mitchell’s Grove “Show in the Grove”.

On May 21st, these club members were at First Church of God in Archdale, NC, for a fund-raiser to benefi t their youth group. Ray and Deborah Haynes took “Top 100” with their 1992 LT1 Chevy Corvette, Charles Hall took “Top 100 and Best Original Car” with his 1965 Ford Falcon, Judi and Donald Grubb won the “Top 100 and Best Engine” award with their 1964 ½ Ford Mustang and Kenneth Payne took the “Top 100 and Best Under Carriage” with his 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Also on May 21st, our club members were at the American Children’s Home in Lexington, NC. This event was the 13th Annual American Children’s Home “Show-off Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show”. At this show Bill and Lou Kirkman took the “Top 10 Original” with their 1972 Chevelle Super Sport and Red Charles took the “Top 10 Truck” category with his 1957 Sinclair Station Chevy Truck. Other club members attending this show were Larry Stamey, Staley and Emily Hancock.

On May 28, 2011, the “2011 Inaugural Petty’s Garage—Spring Fling Car Show”, was attended by club members Staley Hancock and Ray & Deborah Haynes with their 1992 Corvette LT1. This event held in Randleman, NC, was to kick off what is hoped to be a popular show stop for area car show enthusiast. If you are a Mopar fan or owner—this has to be the perfect location. King Richard was in attendance to autograph speedometer clusters for their new legacy line of performance Mopar’s. This event was the unveiling of “Legacy by Petty”. The food was good and the crowd was enthusiastic. Good luck to ‘Petty’s Garage’ and to their new affiliation with the automotive hobby of collecting and showing.

Now for this newsletters featured club member Don Wilborne. On May 11, 2011, I visited with Don at his home in Thomasville, NC. The weather early on was threatening, but gave way to some great photos of Don’s 1939 Ford Standard Coupe.

Don has been with the Furnitureland Chapter Car Club since the early 1980’s. After meeting some of our club members at area car shows, Don was asked to join the club. Thus began his car showing hobby.

When Don turned 16 years old, he told his Daddy, he did not want to “Farm” anymore. Don got in his 1930 Model A Club Coupe and left South Boston, VA and ended up in Thomasville, NC. He worked for a local furniture factory and also worked for Jewell Cotton Mill.

In 1953, Don was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Germany for two years. In the Army, Don learned his life long trade as a machinist and worked as a machinist until 1995. He now works part-time when his schedule allows, with his good friend Barney Ferguson, in the lock business. This business is called “Ferguson and Wilborne Bank Locks”. Don and Barney designed special tools used to unlock Bank lock boxes. They are called on exclusively for their services at local and out of state banks. Good job guys!!

Don and wife Edna have been married for 25 years. Between them, they have four children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Don attends Colonial Baptist Church in Trinity, NC.

Don has a 1931 Model A Roadster Deluxe Convertible. He has had this automobile for 16 years. It was purchased from Donald Welborn’s widow. This 1931 Model A is one of the best in the state and a beautiful automobile for any year!

In addition, he has a 1939 Ford Standard Coupe bought in Richmond, Va. in 1975. This automobile was practicality built from the ground up! Early photos show pieces and parts spread out in a pile all over the floor! Who would ever think this mess of nuts and bolts would have turned out to be such a classic automobile. The unique paint color on this automobile that shines in the sunlight is called Darthmoth Green. This photo does not do it justice. This “1939 Ford” has had numerous awards over the years. But to see the car up close and personal— says more than an ‘award’.

I asked Don what would be his most favorite automobile if he could pick and choose.

He said, I’ll stick with my 1939 Ford. If most of us could say this about the cars we already have, I’d say we’re mighty lucky! We talked about his ideas on the cars of the next generation of car collecting and showing. Don thinks the 1960’s and newer would probably be the choices. Although, most are still interested in the 1956 & 1957 models. A drawback for some of the older cars traveling any distance to shows is their dependability. And, the traffic is not what it used to be as far as speed and “Hey You, get that old clunker out of my way”! We also talked about how car shows have changed, in that you may be able to use parts from other makes and models. Interchangeable Parts?! Don says he wants his cars to be original, as I’m sure most of us do.

Don says, “he has always enjoyed the fellowship and common interests of the club members. Everyone has been so nice and has come to your aid when you need them”. Due to personal family illness, Don has not gotten to participate as much as he would like, in his car showing hobby and club events. But as soon as he can get his scheduled arranged, we’ll probably see more of Don. And we hope so too!! Hope you all have fun with your cars this summer and hope we see you at the car shows.

2011 May/June News Brief

Yea! A little taste of Spring sure feels good and this also starts some car show events and road trips. Our club member’s fi rst Spring road trip was on Saturday, March 19, 2011, to Myrtle Beach, SC, for the 23rd annual “Run to the Sun” car show. Club members attending were Carl Warrell, Lee Mauldin, Staley Hancock and Larry Stamey. There were over 2600 cars and trucks registered for this event.

There seemed to be a strong showing of Mustangs, Chevelle’s, Corvette’s, and quite a good showing of trucks (both stock and custom). There was a better than average showing
